Contingency Tables: Test For Independence

ثبت نشده
چکیده

• If we have data that are measurable (eg. height, time, weight, age, test score, etc.) then we can use the coefficient of correlation (r) to measure the strength of the linear association between two sets of data. • If we have two sets of rankings, then we can use Spearman's Rank Order Correlation Coefficient to measure the strength of the association between them. • However, both of these techniques are not useful when you want to find out whether or not two sets of categorical data are related. For example, is having fair hair independent to having dark colour (dark brown or black) eyes? Another example could be: does taking pill x have any effect on being energetic? • To find out if the data are related, we will need to use a Contingency Table or the Test For Independence.

Default “Gunel and Dickey” Bayes factors for contingency tables

The analysis of R×C contingency tables usually features a test for independence between row and column counts. Throughout the social sciences, the adequacy of the independence hypothesis is generally evaluated by the outcome of a classical p-value null-hypothesis significance test. Unfortunately, however, the classical p-value comes with a number of well-documented drawbacks. Here we outline an...

Visualizing Independence Using Extended Association and Mosaic Plots

Two visualization techniques for the independence problem in 2-way contingency tables—assocation and mosaic plots—are extended in two directions: 1. The visualization is enhanced by displaying the significance of an appropriate test for independence and by using improved color schemes. 2. The implementation in the R system is improved using a more modular design and allowing for more flexible s...

Speeding up the execution of a large number of statistical tests of independence

A massive amount of conditional independence tests on data must be performed in the problem of learning the structure of probabilistic graphical models when using the independence-based approach. An intermediate step in the computation of independence tests is the construction of contingency tables from the data. In this work we present an intelligent cache of contingency tables that allows the...

Information Identities and Testing Hypotheses: Power Analysis for Contingency Tables

An information theoretic approach to the evaluation of 2 x 2 contingency tables is proposed. By investigating the relationship between the Kullback-Leibler divergence and the maximum likelihood estimator, information identities are established for testing hypotheses, in particular, testing independence. These identities not only validate the calibration of p values, but also yield unified power...

A Test of Quasi-independence in Ordinal Triangular Contingency Tables

A new procedure for testing quasi-independence in an ordinal triangular contingency table is proposed as a generalization of Pearson's chi square test. The test is asymptotically equivalent in terms of power to the corresponding restricted likelihood ratio test for contiguous alternatives. Numerical results are also included in this study.

Multiple Testing in Large-Scale Contingency Tables: Inferring Pair-Wise Amino Acid Patterns in β-Sheets

One of the most common test procedures using two-way contingency tables is a test of independence between two categorizations. Current significant tests such as χ2 tests or likelihood ratio tests provide overall independency but bring limited information about the nature of the association in the contingency tables. This study examines the feasibility of using multiple testing procedures for an...
